Hey Queen! Fellow La Salle alumni here :) Glad to run into you here on Medium! I’m glad you wrote this — it’s an issue that needs more conversation. Growing up in China, we actually had the reverse experience: we were told not to alter our natural experience. No makeup. No perming or dying of hair until one becomes an adult. I think it’s another form of suppression because we should be able to do whatever we want to our appearance as long as it’s tasteful. I now work for a bank but I don’t stick to the conservative dress code. I find room to wear cute outfits that are tasteful but not at all conservative. I think more people need to start ignoring these outdated policies and question them out loud. In a county as diverse as this one, corporate America needs to catch up with employee’s individuality. That is how we achieve true diversity and inclusion.
