Hi Melanie. Thank you for reading and sharing your own experience. I’m so glad to hear your team is great at supporting each other and not giving anybody pressure if they take more time off than what’s considered “standard”. It is indeed a company and team by team case. I think it’s so important to gauge the “vibe” of the company and especially your direct team. You can often tell if the team runs on a genuine, supportive and healthy culture in the initial interview process. Of course they will most likely tell you what you want to hear and be on their best behavior when they try to recruit you but I find nuanced reactions very important telltale signs of whether or not they are genuine. Only by being in a team lead by a leader who is open-minded and not buy into the rigidity of traditional corporate culture can one be confident that unlimited PTO doesn’t mean “take it at your own risk”.
