I’m glad that more Chinese women like June are speaking up against social norm and what is expected of them as daughters and future wives. I’m utterly disgusted by the investment banker who prefers women like “plain yogurt” (that analogy is degrading). In Chinese, some call this type of men “cancerous heterosexual male”, which is sort of the equivalent of toxic masculinity. As a Chinese woman myself, I chose to live in another country partly because of the toxic dating culture back home. My parents are a bit more relaxed and respectful of my own choice, but they’re not completely immune to the prevalent mentality that a woman must marry and have kids before 30. I think it takes a lot more women who are highly-educated with their own thoughts and ambitions to speak up against their family and society for this to change. It won’t be easy, but I hope they remember that their happiness is in their own hands — nobody, not even their closet family, has the right to take it away.
